Santa Clara River Watershed Feasibility Study

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, and Ventura County Watershed Protection District

“Experience has taught us that single projects with a limited focus may solve individual problems, but if we look at problems and solutions from a wider geographical view, we can better balance economic, environmental, and quality of life objectives.”

—LTG Robert Flowers, Chief of Engineers, USACE, April 8, 2004

In 2005, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–Los Angeles District and study partners—the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and the Ventura County Watershed Protection District—initiated the Santa Clara River Watershed Feasibility Study.  This collaborative effort in the watershed is intended to provide a holistic approach to evaluating water resources issues and opportunities leading to the development of a watershed management plan that effectively balances the need for sustainable economic development with the need for protection of the watershed’s natural resources.  Specifically, the study’s purpose is to:

  • Establish baseline conditions
  • Develop models to evaluate historic, current, and future conditions
  • Identify opportunities for improvement projects
  • Evaluate and prioritize possible projects in both counties
To date, several efforts have been completed, including detailed topographic mapping and aerial photography, in addition to more focused studies on the watershed’s hydrology, hydraulics, and geomorphology.
