Two species found within the Santa Clara River system have been recommended for "downlisting" from endangered to threatened status by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The California least tern nests in the beach and dune habitats at the mouth of the Santa Clara River as well as Ormond Beach and Mugu Lagoon.  The least Bell's vireo inhabits riparian areas along the Santa Clara and other rivers in the region.
